5th Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge: What to do with the littles while you wash diapers…

As I hit midweek of the challenge, I realize that I probably have it pretty easy with my particular set of babies. I have a toddler who is obsessed with loves YouTube, a one-year-old that still naps, and an easy-going infant that loves her baby swing. Due to these wonderful circumstances, I’ve been able to get away with doing multiple hand washes during the day. Day one was broken into 3 washes… Day two was only two loads. We still went through the same number of flats, covers, and washcloths, but I decided two loads would be easier than three. It worked well!

While I did load number one today, the kiddos were all easily entertained or napping. During the second load, my husband was home to entertain my 2 year old and the girls slept. So I guess I don’t have much advice about what to do with your littles… I happen to be blessed with some workable circumstances and strategic planning! 😉

If you want ideas on what to do with your little one while you wash, I would suggest the following:

  • Music and a mini dance party in your bathroom — or take the wash outside and dance away!
  • A video of your choice. Baby Einstein always worked wonders on my guys.
  • If your baby enjoys your cell phone (and you trust them with it,) hand it over… I love flashcard apps!
  • Take your bucket and plunger outside for the next wash and let your little one play in dirt… That’s always a good time!

Whatever you choose to do, plan your day keeping your wash routine in mind and I guarantee you will feel better about getting it done without feeling pressured or rushed. You’ll find your groove and maybe even enjoy that therapeutic diaper wash.

If you are participating in the challenge, what do you do to keep your littles busy?

Since I usually do 50 plunges and let it sit and then 50 plunges more for my rinse and my wash cycle, I’m really not in the bathroom that long. No longer than, say, going potty. So I don’t really worry too much about keeping them entertained. Usually they are in the backyard first thing in the morning anyway so it’s not big deal.
