5th Annual Flats & Handwashing Challenge: My Stash!

Day 2 of the challenge has had a good start. I managed to stay on top of the diaper laundry yesterday by washing a total of 3 times (yes… you read that right… and no, it wasn’t too bad I promise.) Today I am going to tell you a little bit more about our stash.…

Day 2 of the challenge has had a good start. I managed to stay on top of the diaper laundry yesterday by washing a total of 3 times (yes… you read that right… and no, it wasn’t too bad I promise.) Today I am going to tell you a little bit more about our stash.

Diapering 3 babies, whether you choose cloth or not, is not going to be cheap. Flats will ease a little bit of the cost because the options are pretty convenient! Last week, I gave a brief description of what my plan was but it has changed a little bit.

My current stash consists of the following:

  • 4 Flip Covers ($5 ea* On Sale)
  • 4 WAHM Covers ($60 because they are just too cute dang it.)
  • 1 Beat up Best Bottoms cover ($16.95 purchased before Ben was born… so about 3 yrs old)
  • 1 Beat up Bumpkins Cover ($5 purchased pre-loved in a b/s/t)

That breaks down to a tad over 3 covers per baby. That’s a total of $102 on diaper covers… but broken down per child, equals to about $34 each.

Add in the following:

  • 12 receiving blankets (purchased at Goodwill $10)
  • 12 Flats (Previously owned but originally purchased for about $24)
  • 6 receiving blankets (Gifts from a baby shower)

That’s a total of 30 flat diapers for all 3 babies! For about $34, I can have inserts to hold me over for a couple of days with these kiddos. I will not be going a couple of days between washes here though, I don’t need mounds of laundry to hand wash, that’s for sure! lol

I will also be using fleece liners this time around since I have a couple of girls who are mighty sensitive to the wetness. These liners were free with a previous purchase so they add nothing to my overall cost!

  • Total cost for all of our stash: $136
  • Cost per child is just slightly over $45.

Not too shabby, huh? I must add in that the only “new” purchase was the blankets (and our dollar store plunger.) Everything else had been purchased prior to the challenge! I’m sure that cost could have been even lower if I had never purchased flats and simply bought some more receiving blankets for my first round at this. I could have also saved a ton of money on my covers if I had gone with something other than a WAHM and taken advantage of a sale here and there… But it’s so nice to be able to support fellow mamas. There are ways to cut costs, you just have to get creative!
