Cloth Diapers: Newborn Edition

Seeing as we are approaching the due date for this new little addition, I find it fitting to fill you in on my cloth diapering plan. I started cloth diapering 2 1/2 years ago when Ben was born. At the time, I had no idea how many diapers he would need during his newborn phase…

Seeing as we are approaching the due date for this new little addition, I find it fitting to fill you in on my cloth diapering plan. I started cloth diapering 2 1/2 years ago when Ben was born. At the time, I had no idea how many diapers he would need during his newborn phase and I certainly underestimated how many diapers I would be changing! lol

I decided to invest in One-Size diapers when I started building my cloth diaper stash but I also made sure to have a couple of newborn sized covers and a dozen newborn prefolds… Little did I know then, that this mini newborn stash wasn’t going to be enough to get us through ONE DAY!

My Ben still had his little umbilical cord attached and the one size diapers were just not suitable to use while we waited for his stump to fall off. So, we alternated between cloth and disposable diapers for the first two weeks or so. It worked out ok but I was really hopeful that I would be able to avoid disposable altogether! Oh well, you live and learn!

When baby girl arrived in February, I KNEW what to expect and I KNEW I needed more newborn cloth (since I had already sold off Ben’s mini stash.) So I searched up gently used diapers in my local cloth diaper group and various other cloth diaper buy/sell/trade sites. (I didn’t know how long she would be staying after all, so pre-loved made sense!) Success! I was able to score some decently priced diapers and I was able to use cloth on baby girl shortly after her arrival! Since she was a petite baby, newborn cloth was perfect for her… I’d say she was in her newborn fluff for about 2 months or so. (Ben was a bit on the chubby side due to his nursing habits so we moved on to one size diapers when he was about 3 weeks old.)

From those two experiences, I learned quickly that having the newborn diapers is a blessing! They are tiny and perfectly made to fit those skinny newborn baby legs. They usually have a snap down rise to accommodate for that belly button while it’s healing. They allow you to snap onsies without too much bulk, and they are just super darn cute to boot! This time around, I definitely have more than a dozen prefolds! 😉  I am prepared to start using cloth from day one! I hope it works out that way for us and that this 3rd time is the charm. I think my hospital bag is just going to be filled with fluff!

It’s going to be a sad day when I have to say goodbye to these adorable tiny diapers. Maybe I’ll keep just one as a keepsake… The kids will get a kick out of how tiny these are when they look at their baby memorabilia some day.

Ive always wanted to cloth diaper but not sure if i have the stomach for it. Having to wash poo off a diaper grosses me out. They have super cute ones, maybe ill try it if I have another baby.

I honestly thought the poop factor would be tough for me too… Luckily, while exclusively breastfeeding, I was able to skip that step. Breastfeeding poo is completely water soluble and can be put straight into the washer! Any poo after solids can be avoided by using disposable diaper liners… you pick up the liner and flush, easy peasy!

This is making me want to cloth diaper again! You have a gorgeous stash! It feels a bit odd to call diapers gorgeous, but nonetheless…

I am putting away my CD stash today. My youngest is potty trained and I just use disposabke for night time. Next time around I want to try CD’ing from the get go instead of using disposables right away. How many NB diapers did you end up getting all together?

I think I have a total of about 30 Rebekah. Some are prefolds and covers and others are all in ones. 🙂

Thanks! I should start collecting them as I can, much easier on the wallet a little at a time. 🙂

It’s nice to find other people locally that do cloth. I’m expecting my 4th and am going to use cloth. I wanted to with my 3rd but for some reason it didn’t happen and before that i just never considered it. I’ve bought some used diapers and if all goes well I’ll be getting a cloth diaper loan before baby is born.

I love to see other local mommas using cloth too! I didn’t cloth my first two sons and really wish I had known how convenient it is… I’m sure I would have saved tons of $$ … But we live and learn! So here I am setting up cloth for my new little bundle… Hopefully I can finish potty training my toddler before baby arrives! Lol
